High and to the Right
I have had many great responses, feedback even criticism over the last couple posts; for which I am very grateful and am having a lot of fun. I am grateful for the advice and I hope others are gaining as well.
Keeping with the goals and dreams or expectations verses contentment. I was sitting in a sacrament meeting and I really enjoyed the talks. I have taken a lot of what was said and twisted it to serve my purposes.
Since we have entered the year 2020, let's twist that to an eye exam, "2020 is a year of vision." We all know hind sight is 20/20, because its much clearer than what is ahead. It is also difficult to focus on so many things at one time. In the sacrament meeting they spoke about, "Adjust Your Focus." The example was given: When driving if you stare at the road directly in front of the car it is difficult to stay in the lane; but but adjusting your focus and raising your gaze and look down the road, it is much easier to better picture.
Here is where I am going to re adjust the focus of what was spoken about... It is necessary for us to have goals and dreams, to have things worth our time and energy, to motivate us, to set expectations to fight toward. But how? Zero in on specific tasks. Like zeroing a new rifle or scope, use precision and minor adjustments to make major and drastic changes over time. During sacrament meeting they discussed tasks such as scripture reading or be a better neighbor or friend. Add to this list a specific little change that can make that drastic change. So how does "Kentucky Windage" apply to this, or is it useful at all in our lives? For those unfamiliar with the term Kentucky Windage, it means take a shot, and adjust on the fly, or walk in to the target. (This is my question to the masses for this post, please comment).
One of my huge lofty unrealistic goals or dreams, even an expectation set for myself, is to again go hiking with my wife and kids and explore this amazing Earth. If I focus on the final goal of hiking Mount Everest, (Shout out to you pal and wife). I will go insane and feel like a failure. So by zeroing in on little tasks or by celebrating the small victories on the path toward the big finale, I am able to maintain a positive outlook and find joy.
During the same Sunday meetings a comment was later made about being lost at night while camping, and the only light was in the distance at the bathroom. The comment was made, as long as the focus was on the light the journey was simple and without fear. However the return, with the light at your back looking into nothing but darkness, they were filled with fear and doubt. We are blessed with imaginations, and lofty goals to show us a potential pathway. By keeping our eyes fixed on them, and by celebrating every hole we get around, or fall into and escape.
A choice must be made where our point of focus lies; directly in front with no direction and living moment to moment;or so high and far that it becomes impossible and a burden to think about. The one real wrong answer is to do nothing and make no choice at all. This isn't a life, it isn't even a real existence. Make the choice.
Decide to Decide.
